We are an Australian based organization primarily concerned with denouncing human rights abuses in Chile. Our main focus in 2014 is the extradition of Adriana Rivas from Australia to face justice in Chile, for crimes committed during the Pinochet dictatorship.
We call on the Australian government to observe international protocols regarding people accused of committing crimes against humanity that are currently residing in Australia.
Adriana Rivas is a Chilean citizen who worked as an intelligence agent for the National Intelligence Directorate (DINA), Chile’s much-feared secret police during the Pinochet dictatorship. She was involved in kidnappings and played a major role in interrogating victims during torture sessions in the Simon Bolivar barracks described as an extermination center. Information about this secret detention center only came to light in 2007 after people came forward to testify about its existence.
Adriana Rivas has lived in Sydney since 1978 and when she returned to Chile in 2006 was arrested and jailed for 3 months. She was released on bail to await trial and fled illegally into Argentina, then returning to Australia.
We call on the current Australian and Chilean governments to respect the Treaty on Extradition between Australia and the Republic of Chile (Canberra, 6 October 1993) and bring Adriana Rivas to justice in Chile.
